Best Synth Music 2021

Let’s dive into the electronic world of synth music!

Number Five: Oh Yung – Godless

Oh Yung released Godless in May, and ๐”€๐“ฑ๐“ช๐“ฝ ๐“ช ๐“ซ๐“ช๐“ท๐“ฐ๐“ฎ๐“ป it still is! Every song is worthy of praise, but perhaps none so much as “What U Wanna Do” for its complete bonkersness! The only flaw is its shortness!

Number Four: Big Lad – Power Tools

I’ll always remember the time I saw some dude cover a Venetian Snares song on an actual drum kit. I was so impressed by that! Well, Big Lad have turned that energy into the physical world, and play breakcore with a real drummer! Of course, that means you don’t get those inhuman beats anymore, but these human beats are still really great, and the pitch manipulation so typical of the genre remains, which is amazing! Big Lad consistently delivers awesome albums, and this one is no different!

Number Three: Giant Claw – Mirror Guide

Mirror Guide is one of the more “out-there” albums on this list, and it’s so fascinating, with its constantly bouncing rhythms and shifting timbres, that I kept being pulled back to it. One of the best experimental electro releases of the year!

Number Two: Erang – Prisonnier du rรชve

Prisonnier du rรชveโ€”Prisoner of the Dreamโ€”is a true work of love dedicated to the music of one’s childhood, specifically book-record sets, which are the ancestors of audiobooks, but which had music. As such, Prisonnier du rรชve takes you on a nostalgic adventure, and it’s such a heart-warming album, filled with care and attention to detail.

Number One: Rรฏga – Amorphรฉe

Disclaimer: we released this album on our label, but we did it because we truly believed in it!
Rรฏga is no stranger to overdoing things, yet, with Amorphรฉe, he overdid himself! Four tracksโ€”culminating in almost 100 minutes!โ€”of meandering explorations of electronic music meshed with classical percussion and the avant-garde use of microrhythms all throughout this massive opus make for a mind-blowing experience, and a journey for the senses. It’s a one-in-a-lifetime achievement, and the dedication of Rรฏga to musical exploration is on full display here.
