Best of Progressive Rock 2021

Progressive rock is one of my great loves, from Yes (the old Yes) to Spock’s Beard to… today’s contenders, I listen to a lot of prog. And, if you’re here, you’re probably like me!

Number Five: The Ranch – Together to Get Here to Get Here Together

That album is good, and I mean, so good! First off, it’s not every day you get to talk about a band from Malta, that little island in the Mediterranean, and I guess it’s even rarer to talk about such an incredible one! With a perfect blend of prog rock and jazz fusion, with an unbelievably talented scat singer in Eglé! This album is a boat-load of fun!

Number Four: King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard – Explorations into Microtonal Tunings, Volume 3: LW

In their Explorations into Microtonal Tunings series, LW is by far my favourite. Microtonal Flying Banana was cool but way too repetitive for my tastes, and KG just missed something, I was not drawn to it. With LW, however, nothing is to be desired: the riffs, the melodies, the harmonic progressions, everything is on point! On top of that, the album gets pretty heavy near the end!

Number Three: Seims – Four

The mighty Seams are back! And what a show they gave us! Four is probably their best work to date; it’s creative, varied, complex, layered, and impressive on all aspects. A marvel.

Number Two: Voronoi – The Last Three Seconds

The electro-jazz-prog band Voronoi really slew it this year with their new album, The Last Three Seconds. It’s filled with great synth sounds, mind-bending riffs, and thoughtful songwriting. Definitely the best instrumental prog rock album of the year!

Number One: Rhizone – Metropolis, or, In Search of the Black Water, Act Ⅰ: Timelines

That’s the one! The best prog rock album of 2021! You might have missed it, but here’s why you should go back and get it: it’s a seventy-minute concept album, it’s got a Western song, it’s got polka, it’s got Porcupine Tree worship, it’s got saxophone, it’s got throat singing, and more! And it’s all expertly made too, so, I beg you, go immerse yourselves in that amazing album!
