NEKROSKOP – Baptized in Formalin

Baptized in Formalin cover

Nekroskop is a Crust/ Grind/ Black project from Malmö/Lund, Sweden, that started making noise during the early half of 2012. Now, a little more than a year since the band’s reception, the band just presented their first ever recording, the “Baptized in Formalin” EP which was released in May through Goregeous Productions. What follows is an attemp to describe this swedish blackened death armageddon.

After a lightning fast drum intro, the grind induced ‘Coffinsplitter’ presents itself with razor sharp riffing, providing a wicked start that could not have been more appropriate for such an album. What is quite notable from … Read more

Brendan Byrnes’ Micropangaea

Micropangaea is a unique thing. So unique I can’t even find any appropriate comparison or metaphor…

The use of microtonality in music has long been kept to advanced and underground acts, be it of metal, ambient or ethnic music. Jute Gyte has recently released an astonishing microtonal album, Discontinuities, which was written in 24-EDO. Basically, that means that a 24-EDO guitar will have twice as many frets as a normal one, bringing the possibility to play quarter-tones without having to always bend a string. The black metal-vibe of the album is given by the great use of dissonant intervals … Read more

GARTH ARUM – The Dawn of a New Creation

Spanish project GARTH ARUM re-emerges through time with its debut album, marking the dawn of a new passion, of a new fire. ‘The Dawn of New Creation’ is ispired by dreams and emotions, venturing further into the depths of the human psyche. A demiurge that leads the path to a new universe, beyond the notion of existence. This is the album of a lifetime, a deliverance of body and soul of the album’s creator Nightmarer, which is finally complete more than ten years after its initial conception. The songs were highly influenced by the music which bloomed in the 90s, … Read more

The Gabriel Construct or the quintessence of progressive rock

Gabriel Lucas Riccio. That name probably doesn’t ring a bell… yet! Because after listening to the masterpiece that is Interior City, his name will sit besides those of legends like Neal Morse (Spock’s Beard, Transatlantic) or Casey Crescenzo (The Dear Hunter).

With ex members of Periphery (Travis Orbin, Tom Murphy), David Stivelman, Soren Larson, and Sophia Uddin, the band feeds on dissonant chords layered with vocal harmonies with many complex rhythms as a backbone. Adding to the traditional guitar-bass-drum band, pianos and keyboards fill the few vacant spots musically speaking, and finally the saxophone is like an olive … Read more

TesseracT – Altered State

Our four-dimensional cube fellows just released their new bomb, entitled Altered State. It is divided into ten songs and four movements.

Ashe does an amazing job for vocal duties. Antipodal to the trend, his vocals are clean only, and give a wonderful feeling of dreaminess at times. The other instrumentists are exceptionally talented, too, and blow this off in your face on all of the 51 minutes of the album. Polyrhythms, djents, solos, and just freaking awesome riffs dot the album and make sure to keep you interested and on the edge.

Altered State is a strongly recommended album … Read more
