EXCLUSIVE SONG PREMIERE:
The Mercury Tree & Cryptic Ruse –
“The Cold Flame Burns”

The Music

The Words

Ever since their inception, The Mercury Tree has moved from an alternative metal band towards more and more obscure progressive rock and genre fusion. This progression has reached a new apex, thanks to the collaboration with xenharmonic prog solo band Cryptic Ruse on their upcoming EP, Cryptic Tree. For a few albums already, The Mercury Tree has experimented with multiple different tonal systems at once on their few latest albums, but this EP aims at pushing that experimentation to its limit.

Sectioned – Annihilated

The Music

The Words

A cursory glance at the cover art for Annihilated, by Edinburgh’s Sectioned, might fool you into believing that this is some sort of sappy indie folk record; with its earnest depiction of what is presumably an area of rural Britain, the tones and hues of the photo seem to give a wistful, bittersweet atmosphere. However, much like the history surrounding Scotland’s beautiful capital city itself, a closer inspection reveals a much more sinister underbelly, with a hollowed out car in the foreground and lifeless winter trees in the background. It’s as if the chaotic … Read more

Patrick Shiroishi Rob Magill Duo – Eyes in the Dirt

The Music

The Words

Patrick’s a long-time respected player and friend of mine, and his musical explorations always resonate with me. Whether it be in the mathematical Upsilon Acrux, in the zeuhlish Corima, or in any of his other projects like Nakata or Sewing Circle, his playing is emotional, raw, and unique. Rob Magill, on the other hand, is a new name for me. He’s no rookie either, though, as he’s release many albums through Weird Cry Records, influenced by classical music, jazz, noise, and many more.

Eyes in the Dirt comes from an improvisation session carried out in a … Read more

Vacuus – Hyperkulturemia

The Music

The Words

The duo of Will Allegretto and Cody Silander known as Vacuus recently released Hyperkulturemia, their debut album, following a 2015 EP titled Abreaction. Groups with fewer people tend to be the ones displaying the more creative ideas, and this is the case here. Often times, however, their music is brought down by one or more of many things: use of poorly-programmed virtual instruments, lacking depth in their sound, lack of interesting ideas, or more. This is not the case with Vacuus, fortunately. The bicephalous beast embraces its studio nature and its two limbs harness … Read more

Venetian Snares – She Began to Cry Tears of Blood Which Became Little Brick Houses When They Hit the Ground

The Music

The Thoughts

Venetian Snares is a well-known Canadian electronic music experimenter; he’s been at it since at least 1997 with Fake:Impossible. Today, with his twenty-fourth full-length studio album (from what I can gather), Aaron Funk delivers a surprising blow to the unprepared listener. Indeed, She Began to Cry Tears of Blood Which Became Little Brick Houses When They Hit the Ground is an album most hectic that seems to be unable to keep a steady focus for more than a minute.

First of all, the twelve song titles read like surrealist snippets, each creating its very own … Read more
