Aly The Band – Welcome to Our Nation (2010)

Listen to this while you read !

Why adding “The Band” to “Aly”? Of course we could be mistaken, with Aly &  AJ, Doctor Aly Abbara, Aly Michalka…

I’d hit that…

Who said that?

Never mind…

Welcome to Our Nation is Aly The Band’s not-so-original album name. I guess it was made that way so it could reflect the album’s content. Not so original hardcore punk.

I mean, it’s not bad! In fact, Aly The Band made something quite good!

Unfortunately, this album won’t change a thing in the hardcore world, since it does not bring anything new … Read more

Exist – In Mirrors EP (2010)

Listen to this while you read!

Groovy ambient progressive death post-metal.

That’s about the most accurate way I thought of to categorize Exist.

The EP, which is just a few minutes under the 30 minute mark, starts with the impressive “Writhe”. The clean guitar here is just a hint of what’s to come later in this song, and on the rest of the album. But sooner than later, the death metal part of this unique blend soon comes to the surface, with harsh vocals, blast beats, and heavy riffs.

There is a very cool atmosphere created with the help of … Read more

Youtube : Metallicpuppetmaster

Microtonal metal hasn’t got much light shed on it.
Obscurer than any obscure band, microtonality has somehow existed since the XVIth century, and probably before that.

Metallicpuppetmaster, with a 24EDO BC Rich (a standard guitar is in 12EDO, so instead of semi-tones, this guitar has quarter-tones), a drum and some silly lyrics, succeeds in bringing some focus on this uncommon musicality.

This song is brutal, and the guy is certainly versatile. Guitar, drums, and singing! Wow! That guy could record an album all by himself and it would sound absolutely killer!

Subscribe to his channel, he’s got some other … Read more

Journal – Casualties of War (2007) and Unlorja (2010)

This is a big day, and here’s two more reviews for Journal.

Casualties of War

Have you ever been charged with manslaughter? Has your doctor ever told you that you had schizophrenia or were bipolar? Do you feel a visceral hate for any music besides what’s on your personal computer or iPod?

If you answered yes to one of these questions, then Journal is for you.

Directly from California, this band hits us like a tour van going 100 mph (like it could go that fast… well maybe down a hill). With a special and unique blend of deathcore, math, … Read more

Brume d’Automne – Brume d’Automne

Brume d’Automne (Autumn Mist in English, if you haven’t figured out already) is a savage, beastly, untamed monster. I’m sure the band draws inspiration from the tales of the Bonhomme 7 heures in Quebec, that mysterious character used by parents to scare their children and make sure they’re in bed soon, although not sleeping and shitting their pants.

This black-metal band with folk influences sings in French, but you fat-ass American won’t bother because there is little chance you will actually be able to decipher the language in which that monster sings.

If you do care about lyrics, on the … Read more
