Review: Snakefeast – The Pythoness

Baltimore-based Snakefeast comes pretty much out of the left field for me. Basically, it’s a guitarless progressive sludge quintet. But none of that ELE bullshit (3 basses that do the same thing), the instruments are: a drum, a bass guitar, a cello, and a saxophone. That can be quite interesting, isn’t it? But instead, they fall just a bit short.

Honestly, this combination of instruments could make something so awesome, that it’s criminal to have let the opportunity pass them by, and instead do some pretty uninspired sludge. Don’t get me wrong, the bass riffs are amazing and the songs … Read more

Review: Systems – Ghost Medicine

While searching for Systems‘ bandcamp page, earlier, I arrived on Systems‘ one by mistake. And I was really not disappointed!

Even though far from similar to non-diatonic experimental prog metallers Systems, Systems definitely is an interesting band also. More in the vein of post-hardcore and post-metal, with a tinge of experimental, black metal, and progressive elements that are [always] welcome. The album, in fact, consists of one huge 41-minute song, divided into eight parts about (from what I can tell) myths, particularly in medicine, but not limited to it.

It really is a well-crafted album, with great, almost … Read more

News: Entheos, or the almost-reunion of Animosity

Featuring bassist Evan Brewer, guitarist Frank Costa, and drummer Navene Koperweis, along with Systems‘ singer Chaney Crabb. There’s not much to listen to, right now, except this small guitar-tracking video on facebook. That sounds quite promising. The album comes out march 15!

My only guess is that they are afraid of the hate coming from fans of said disappointing bands/albums. But I don’t care! I’m here to tell the truth. Well, my opinion, rather, if you’re inclined to hear it.

So here we go. Here’s the stuff that disappointed me in 2014.

First off, Extinction Level Event was a big let-down. Three bass players with a core … Read more

Review: Seer – Vol. 1

From Beautiful British-Columbia comes Seer, a vintage-sounding stoner/sludge metal band which makes them, from this point of view, similar to Dawnbringer. Obviously, the two bands have wildly different influences and goals for their music, but still.

I have to say I really like the inclusion of a harmonica in the first of the two songs on Vol. 1, I think it’s a rather underused instrument, particularly in metal, and with the exception of Blood & Banjos, I really don’t have any name in mind who used one, even in other genres! The production and sound is clear, … Read more
