Les Mouvements – Les Mouvements (2013)

Les Mouvements is a French instrumental jazzu progressive rock duo comprised of a drummer and a fretless guitar-harp player. Yup, an instrument that is very rarely seen or heard, with the added bonus of fretlessness! How does that sound like? Listen to the video of Laminaires below to find out.

For those of you who do not know what a guitar-harp is, it’s a hybrid instrument usually consisting of a guitar, with added strings that are meant to be played openly, as accompaniment or else, and often tuned to form chords. Check out this picture to look at the sweet … Read more

Review: Spectral Lore – Voyager

Spectral Lore is best known for their contemplative, mournful progressive black metal, like in their latest LP III, which we loved! However, they’ve unveiled a facet of themselves that I did not know: ambient/electronic music. Those two music genres seem pretty antipodal, but, in the case of Spectral Lore, they serve the same purpose: create an atmosphere; immerse the listener into their world. The only difference is the approach.

Review: Spectral Lore – III

Well, fuck me! I finally am in love with that album. It wasn’t enough that Metal for music majors write a stellar review of it, I just had to experience it on my own. I couldn’t let someone else make the journey for me and read his journal, it seems like I really had to live it. Spectral Lore is a Greek progressive black metal band that seems to have a rather short but … Read more

Snailking – Storm

Snailking are, truly to their name, the kings of slow, sludgy, heavy, moody, drony doom music. Their sophomore album Storm only confirms that claim, and for those who can appreciate that kind of music, it’s a good one!

The slowly crawling riffs, the desperate cries, and the confined sound of the drums make for a particularly deranging experience, one that would be better appreciated in a live setting with the loud and constant drone inside your guts, and the pounding bass drum that makes your whole chest resonate. However, it is a problem that every band in … Read more

Soulmass – Despairing Fates

Souls-themed blackened doom metal band Soulmass delivers us, through their indiegogo campaign, their new album, otherwise due October 31st, entitled Despairing Fates. The album is full of great riffs and deep vocals, along with a sense of loss and despair in its oppressing atmosphere.

Bryan and Brett, the two men of the band, wrote lyrics based on the ever more sad and melancholic stories found throughout the games Demon’s Souls, and Dark Souls I and II. This kind of music really is the best to support such lyrical content and emotions, the weight of the … Read more
