I would have expected more from this project. Ambient music mixed with heavy metal made me hope for a metal Pink Floyd… something like a Dark Floyd!

But reality isn’t always giving you what you want, and Oceans of Night isn’t Dark Floyd.

It is a good album with a lot of cool moments, but with more meh moments.

Guitarist and composer Scott Mosher drives the album with his guitar riffs and leads, while Scott Oliva reminds me of Nils Rue of Pagan’s Mind, which isn’t a bad thing in … Read more

Acheode – Anxiety (2011)

by Dæv Tremblay

Listen to this while you read… on myspace -_-

Atonal brutal mathcore from Italy. Hey! They don’t only make great shoes and pizza, but one of the best metal bands on this Earth.

At times crazy-fast with weird riffs and notes being emitted from all around, with crushing blast beats and pain-inducing vocals, and at times slow and just plainly brutal, Anxiety is one piece of Italy that I wish you parents bring back from their trip in Europe.

Cuz u kno… That’s what your parents do when they don’t beat you.

The 8 string guitar is put … Read more

Vanisher – Unbound (2012)

by Dæv Tremblay

Listen to this while you read!

Okay, I know this album doesn’t showcase any harsh vocals, so you can call this fake and gay and not listen to it… but you’d miss on some true jewel, not that jewels are that manly, in fact they aren’t, at all… but Vanisher’s Unbound is truly beautiful, driving, and leaves a permanent mark in your mind. Like a real beautiful piece of jewelry.

Okay, I should be burned for using such a cliché.

Unbound will make emotions flow through your mind as if you lived them. Thanks to Justin Reich at vocals for … Read more

Open Denile – Visions of the Next Dimension (2012)

by Dæv Tremblay

After a few songs, I told myself “That is a chuggachug band”, but I have been surprised by the last songs there.

Beginning with a sci-fi intro track “Descent Into Denile”, the tracks will take you through different landscapes, but without changing place too much… kinda like when you’re in a train.

The comparison doesn’t stop there: blast bears and aggressive low-register riffs resemble the relentless sound of the train’s wheels on the tracks. The singing there might recall some of the wind howling through half-open windows, with occasional clean singing here and there, for prog’s sake. I would have … Read more

Cormorant – Dwellings (2011)

by Dæv Tremblay

Listen to this while you read!

Cormorant’s third is the one! If you didn’t know Cormorant yet, their own blend of death/black/progressive metal, it is the time to, because Dwellings is one hell of an album!

Close to an hour of material goes on with this one!

And the artwork… Could you ask for a better artwork than this one? Seriously?

Mid-paced goodness, violence turning into contemplation, and some WTF moments. Dwellings feature great guitar playing and composition by Nick Cohon and Matt Solis. There are catchy riffs, soaring leads and solos. The bass is not too much hidden in … Read more
