Open Denile – Visions of the Next Dimension (2012)

After a few songs, I told myself “That is a chuggachug band”, but I have been surprised by the last songs there.

Beginning with a sci-fi intro track “Descent Into Denile”, the tracks will take you through different landscapes, but without changing place too much… kinda like when you’re in a train.

The comparison doesn’t stop there: blast bears and aggressive low-register riffs resemble the relentless sound of the train’s wheels on the tracks. The singing there might recall some of the wind howling through half-open windows, with occasional clean singing here and there, for prog’s sake. I would have … Read more

Cormorant – Dwellings (2011)

Listen to this while you read!

Cormorant’s third is the one! If you didn’t know Cormorant yet, their own blend of death/black/progressive metal, it is the time to, because Dwellings is one hell of an album!

Close to an hour of material goes on with this one!

And the artwork… Could you ask for a better artwork than this one? Seriously?

Mid-paced goodness, violence turning into contemplation, and some WTF moments. Dwellings feature great guitar playing and composition by Nick Cohon and Matt Solis. There are catchy riffs, soaring leads and solos. The bass is not too much hidden in … Read more

Car Bomb – Third Revelation (w^w^^w^w, 2012)

AT FUCKING LAST!

Car Bomb’s first single from their upcoming album w^w^^w^w (some will call it sinewave or whatever, but be a true one and call it “double-u-caret-double-u-caret-caret-double-u-caret-double-u”).

And guess what! It features Joe Duplantier from Gojira! It’s not as if it was written in the video title!

Car Bomb’s album Centralia left a permanent mark in my mind, and hearing this song makes me think that double-u-caret-double-u-caret-caret-double-u-caret-double-u will be at least as fucking great as Centralia was.

UK #1 Albums Year in Review: 1981

So we move into 1981, a year with some repeat artists from 1980 and some suprising newcomers. For the most part, rock is well represented with some new wave tossed in for good measure. Not much else to say, let’s dive in shall we?

The year kicks off with Adam and The Ants “Kings of the Wild Frontier”, the first artist of many this year that didn’t go to #1 in the U.S.. This is a good album, although Ant’s vocal style isn’t for everyone. After that we get John Lennon and Yoko Ono “Double Fantasy”. Don’t be surprised, but … Read more

Coheed and Cambria – The Afterman trailer

OH. MY. FUCKING. VOID.

What? God doesn’t exist!

If there is a band that I theoretically should not like, it’s Coheed and Cambria. Pop-rock with a tiny touch of prog. What’s more to hate than this?

But man, what drives me here is the story. In this case, it has gone by the name The Bag.On.Line Adventures, before eventually changing to The Amory Wars. And I’ve been buying every single comic that has been done by Claudio (lead singer and guitarist), and even the novel for The Year of the Black Rainbow.

I’ve been dying to know what would … Read more
