Jusska‘s EP, Tsuki, came out in January. It’s a good mix of heavy, groovy djent with clean and ambient vocals.
Pontus Grunve‘s new release, IV, is an interesting take on prog rock with jazzier aesthetics and borrows from post-rock as well. It’s a very well-made EP that will please most fans of the genre. Night Terrors is a very experimental jazz album. Armed only with an alto sax, a guitar, and a drumset (as well as a bunch of exotic instruments), the project puts world music, folk, as well as field recordings and more ambient stuff… Read more

Kurushimi – Kurushimi

Kurushimi album artKurushimi is a new collective of sorts including members of Serious Beak, Instrumental, adj. (bands we have covered here on CTEBCM!), Fat Guy Wears Wolf Shirt, as well as a few other members. They just dropped their self-titled debut on Art as Catharsis, and I’m going to be up front with you: there is no point trying to attach genres to this (so naturally we’re going to try it!). Like all great music, it defies easy attempts at description and categorization.

The first question that came to me upon hearing of this project: What does Kurushimi mean, anyway? Knowing nothing … Read more

Let’s start off with Montreal’s Éohum, and their black/doom metal album, Ealdfaeder. It’s a very potent album with a strong message about the lost civilizations and cultures because of, mainly, colonialism. A great record. Go big or go home… Axon-Neuron have outdone themselves with their double-LP, Metamorphosis. Almost two hours of great and intelligent prog rock with various jazz and classical influences, as well as a bit of pop and electro music. Am Fost La Munte Și Mi-a Plăcut is a Romanian post-rock band that clearly likes long titles; from the album name to the song titles,… Read more

Last week was very slow, but only today I got 4 new albums so I guess it makes up for last week!

Out March 11th, Mithridatic‘s debut album is a ceaseless discharge of blackened death metal that only France seems to be able to craft. It’s a solid and oppressive slab so remember the name. The newest release from Art as Catharsis is Australia’s 苦しみ (Kurushimi), a free jazz and grindcore melting pot that reminds me strongly of Japanese improvisation noise-grind band Schreckwürmer, but with softer passages. This is yet another stellar album on AaC’s ever-growing list of releases!… Read more

Cetacean – Breach | Submerge

Front-Cover-FINAL_122815_1400X1400Cetacean is a band from Los Angeles, California, that came to being in 2015 under the direction of David Sais, with members from well-established bands, such as Black Sheep Wall and Horse the Band, and other musicians. The result is a progressive blackened doom sextet and a 35-minute EP called Breach | Submerge, which was released on January 29th on CD, and will see a vinyl release on March 27th. The designation of EP for a piece longer than half an hour is quite unusual, but understandable given the lengthy nature of doom music, where slow and atmospheric riffs … Read more
