II II II working on a new album!

II II II, the experimental, jazz-mathcore band who brought us A Conundrum on My Coffee Table hit us, this week, with a so-called “Maaasssive 222 album preview”.

What can we expect? Judging by this instrumental, unfinished preview: more of the same, but enhanced, great music!

It seems that publishing that album preview has revived the creative fibre in the band, and that this album now “has to get finished”, according to a facebook comment from II II II themselves. So, when? I don’t know, but if? Certainly so! I’m pretty excited on this, and so should you!… Read more

The Pneumatic Transit premieres Enochian Dyskinesia

The new baby of Jeff Zampillo, formerly of Exotic Animal Petting Zoo, The Pneumatic Transit, has released about 3 minutes of one of their new songs, called Enochian Dyskinesia. It seems like their songs are too extensive to single them out, so we get only 3 minutes of one. And that 3 minutes finishes way too quickly to my taste. Well, at least I kinda know what to expect from their album, “Concerto for Double Moon”. At this moment, I’m still trying to figure out if it’s jazzy rock or rocky jazz… but it sounds pretty prog … Read more

Instrumental is a beautiful adjective

Sydney’s new mathcore band, Instrumental (adj.), just put out the first eponymous single off of their debut EP, A Series of Disagreements. This sounds very promising indeed, opening with 15/16 however in its most basic subdivisions: 4-4-4-3 Edit: 19/16 in 5-5-5-4 subdivisions is more like it. Things get quickly out of hand, with the inclusion of extra bars, and the development of the theme and its transformation over other time signatures as well. The song is well constructed and has great cohesion despite its eclectic nature, and that is thanks to the recurring chord progression and theme … Read more

Troyka – Ornithophobia

Troyka is a jazz band leaning on the experimental side of things, reaching outwards instead of trying to stick to the norm. Their first self-titled album was very light and smooth, but still had many musical intricacies, most of them coming from the guitar. On their sophomore “Moxxy”, they’ve quickly evolved into a more whole-band sound, where the very concept of each song is interesting and well conveyed by every instrument, more reminiscent of math rock than of jazz in its execution.

With their third release, Ornithophobia, the band keeps experimenting with various rhythmic and melodic patterns which give … Read more

trioVD – Fill It Up With Ghosts

trioVD is an experimental jazz trio from the UK, and Fill It Up With Ghosts is their 2009 debut album. After this one, they’ve released X in 2011 and Maze in 2012.

I would readily compare trioVD with T.R.A.M., as they’re both experimental jazz trios comprised of a saxophone, a guitar, and drums. Both lacking the low end and groove provided by the bass guitar; it may be because I’m a bassist myself that I find this somewhat enraging, but it is quite upsetting that such great music goes without a bassist, it seems like such a waste! Still, trioVD, … Read more
