Review: Matheus Manente – Illusions Dimension

Brazilian meteorologist and musician Matheus Manente released his first solo album, Illusions Dimension, a musical journey that will take you to many ends of the progressive rock and metal realms!

First off, the musicianship is flawless. There is a lot of technicality involved, although it is far from being the center point of the album. Solos after solos, we can enjoy the musicality of the meteorologist’s mind. There is quite a good amount of djent influences in the rhythmic department, although it doesn’t sound djent very much.

The Perfect Ping, The Ugliest Piece of Music, or Costas Arrays

The video begins with a long but utterly interesting introduction on the matter. In short, this is music written to bear absolutely no repetition and, based on the premise that beauty in music is found in the repetition of motifs – which is an absolutely subjective and arbitrary statement, the ugliest, or less enjoyable, piece of music ever written.

Of course, it has been called like this to catch the attention of the reader, or the listener, because intelligent people are behind this apparently stupid title.

The music in itself is truly amazing, played on a grand piano at the … Read more

News: Last Chance To Reason – Level 2 video game gets two more chapters

With the release of 2011’s Level 2, an album acclaimed by all and that’s still memorable to this day as one of the best albums of modern progressive metal, Last Chance To Reason worked with independent video game developer Tom Vine to create an interactive multimedia experience. What we got was this, a demo with only the song Upload Complete. It was short, but it was a lot of fun, and it was really cool to play with the music.

Today, The Virus Master has come out, which includes the songs Coded to Fail and Taking Control. I … Read more

Best albums of 2014

So, it’s that time of the year again. It’s snowy, it’s cold, it’s dark, and we’re about to change the last numeral on our calendar… Most of us will have to take some time to anchor this change in their head and will probably still write “2014” whenever they’re asked what year it is, but still. 2014 has been a great year in music releases, and I’ve had the honour of sharing almost all the music I’ve discovered and enjoyed with you guys (whoever reads this blog, if any!), and it’s my pleasure to do so, as always!

Review: Ethan McKenna – Embracing Uncertainty

Don’t let yourself be fooled by its simple appearance and instrumentation, because Embracing Uncertainty is certainly the best acoustic music album I’ve heard in a long while!

Dressing the simple acoustic guitar with fancy playing techniques, like percussive playing, tapping, and probably slapping and popping too, Ethan McKenna is able to keep my mind interested through the listen. Moreover, the song structures are hardly conventional (with maybe a few exceptions), and often make use of uncommon time signatures. A good example of that is the second half of the first song, Dark Night of the Read more
