Let’s begin with Usti Waya‘s folk-lined experimental drone album, From Dust, We Rise. It’s a wonderful journey with loads of instruments thrown in – violin, clarinet and banjo to name a few – in order to create an exotic and intense sound. I’m not big into drone music, but this one is very good!

Releasing on May 6th, Vexxes‘ new EP, Common Ground, is a punkish alternative post-rock album. It’s a bit of an awkward description, but I bet you can imagine how it sounds by reading it. … Read more

What brought the waves, this time?

Look at that, a new 正∞胞体 (Seimugenhoutai) single. Apparently from October 2015, but just today added on bandcamp. It’s a pretty exciting chiptune-esque tech-djent song based on glitch aesthetics. I likes.
Secondly is Norse mythology-obsessed post-black metal band Talamyus, with their upcoming album Honour Is Our Code, Death Is the Reward. It’s a pretty big album on its own, and with very good post-metal compositions. This one comes out on April 12th. Up next is Stuck in November. They’re a really promising math rock band from India, and their debut EP,… Read more

Rorcal – Κρέων, an Analysis Of

creon-hd-front-coverGenève-based Rorcal have an extensive catalogue of furious and obscure metal that goes all the way back to 2007, with their debut EP, The Way We Are, The Way We Were, The Way We Will Be…. Throughout the years, they have carved a name for themselves in the metal community by pushing the boundaries of doom and black metal, releasing songs up to 70 minutes in length, and never making any compromise – be it on their artistic vision or the quality of their releases. Világvége, in particular, brought them to a wider audience, including myself. On March … Read more

That was quick! Only two days after our last OSR showcase we’ve got eight new albums to listen to! All right, no time to waste.

First up is The Random Monsters‘ newest EP, We Pretend It’s All Right. It’s a very good post-rock triptych with pretty heavy moments. It came out just today so I recommend you give it a listen.

Secondly is Derangeable, by Aliases. Another slab of heavy math metal… as we should expect from them. There’s no single or preview available yet; the album comes out on April 15th.

After that, we’ve got… Read more

Danimal Cannon – Lunaria

ALBUM ART Lunaria_RGB_1500x1500Danimal Cannon’s 2011 album Roots was one of the albums that got me into chiptune music (although other Ubiktune releases certainly contributed to that as well) and remains one of my favorite albums still. Danimal’s new album Lunaria contains the same familiar upbeat gameboy programmed chiptunes paired with prog metal guitar riffs, but on a whole new level.

What sets this album apart from past Danimal albums is the fact that the songs were composed on guitar first, with the chiptunes composed around those guitar parts. Also new to Lunaria, is the addition of vocals on a few of the … Read more
