Jackie Frank Russell III – I’m So Fucking Lonely

The Music

The Words

Jackie Frank Russell III made some waves, last year, with Outward Calm, Inward Chaos, his debut album. The Illinois composer comes back with I’m So Fucking Lonely.

The album takes a side step from its predecessor in that it’s much more heavily influenced by electronic music than it appeared in the previous one. This statement is evident on the opening track, “Softly Asking for the Attention of Kings”, while songs like “This Bad Won’t Leave” retains much of its metallicity, with few of the new electronic music elements. One of the pleasant side effects of expansively using electronic music is that the use of a drums program feels much more at home, more relevant, than in the otherwise all-analog environment of a usual metal album. Moreover, even the choice of the sound library here is a statement; doubling-down and exploring this aspect of music thoroughly. In my opinion, that’s much better than using the default samples of programs like EZ Drummer. This holds true for most parts on this album, but for the very heaviest passages, where real drums, or better programming, could have made them even better.

I’m So Fucking Lonely is at times aggressive (Likeme), at times ethereally contemplative (I’m So Fucking Lonely), and at times viciously catchy (V I B E), but at all times it’s a total pleasure. Be ready to be surprised, and fall in love with I’m So Fucking Lonely.
