News: Out of Obscura; Into Alkaloid

Defining themselves as “the World’s most extreme Prog Metal band” (we‘ll be the judge of that, thank you), Alkaloid started a crowdfunding campaign for their upcoming album The Malkuth Grimoire.

The band consists of ex-Obscura’s Christian Muenzner, Linus Klausenitzer, and Hannes Großmann, joined by Morean on vocals, and Danny Tunker on other guitars. With such a stellar lineup, we are to expect stellar musicianship and song construction. But what the first single Carbon Phrases let us hear is embarrassingly underwhelming. It’s certainly not “the World’s most extreme” at what they do, and it doesn’t sound … Read more

Review: In Torment – Sphere Of Metaphysical Incarnations

1 - coverIn Torment is a technical death metal band from Brazil. Sphere of Metaphysical Incarnations is their third and latest album, released through Rapture Records… no, not this one, THIS one (and yes, that’s a myspace link).

They make that traditional kind of tech-death, nothing too fancy or sparkly, just great riffs, blast beats, and cool guitar solos. Existential Animals – Surrealith

Existential Animals‘ djenty instrumental technical death metal EP Surrealith, which revolves around geological themes akin to The Ocean Collective’s Precambrian album, is a strong debut release, it will make you ask for more!

Crafted around geological themes, it is supposed to represent millennia of rock moving, of flowing magma and unmoving bedrock, as well as the passage of time from an inorganic perspective. The instruments uncannily succeed in … Read more

Ancestors Revenge – The Archaic Return

Do you need some more tech-death with fretless bass in your life? Because that’s just what Ancestors Revenge are about, with, I guess, the added blackened adjective to it, given the black metal elements in their music. Blackened tech-death, now we’re talking!

The Archaic Return, the band’s debut album, is long enough to satisfy your hunger and varied enough to keep you interested from start to finish. The drums are absolutely relentless, greatly supporting the riffs and song structure. That drummer is definitely one of the best I’ve got to see recently, he … Read more
