“دختری در شب تنها به خانه می رود” (Dokhtari dar shab tanha be khaneh miravad) is a 2014 horror movie from Ana Lily Amirpour. It is an American movie in Persian language, and it received moderately good reviews. It didn’t strike me as being especially good, but it seems that it struck a chord with Belgian group The Black Heart Rebellion, who decided to write and record their own music to the film. The band has a good track record, with their 2015 album People, When You See the Smoke, Do Not Think It Is Fields They’re Burning being one of my all-time favourites.
On A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night, the band continues their bleak, atmospheric, folk-tinged indie rock, and makes it even darker for the purpose of this parallel universe score. I must say that the songs here capture the enigmatic and futureless fate of the ghost town of Bad City, where the movie takes place. Audio excerpts help to follow the progression of the soundtrack and know where we’re supposed to be in the film. And, obviously, the music takes a lot of inspiration from Middle Eastern and Eastern traditional music. This all adds up to an almost ambient release that parallels the storyline of the movie quite nicely, and evokes many feelings the movie itself failed to.
دختری در شب تنها به خانه می رود / “A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night”, an Alternative Soundtrack to the Motion Picture is a dark and gloomy release. As a Black Heart Rebellion release, it inherits their seal of quality, and places itself as a very good atmospheric release.
