Review: Alkaloid – The Malkuth Grimoire

Alkaloid is the union of members from Necrophagist, Obscura, Spawn of Possession, Aborted, Dark Fortress, God Dethroned, Blotted Science and Noneuclid to create, allegedly, “the most extreme prog metal” band. I’ve already expressed my concerns about this record, but I still decided to give my money to the fund-raising campaign and finally got the fruit of my investment today in the mail. I can’t say I’m unsatisfied.

The album, considerably long, at 73 minutes, begins starkly with Carbon Phrases, which was the first song the band streamed before the album came out. It’s a rock-solid, or rather metal-solid, 9 minute … Read more

Review: Red Seas Fire – Exposition/Confrontation/Resolution

Red Seas Fire originally intended on releasing one album’s worth divided into three EPs throughout one year. However, mostly due to band members changes I suppose, they ended up releasing one EP per year, throughout three years. What you’ve got is Exposition, Confrontation, and Resolution, a 3-EP, 12-track collection of about 60 minutes worth of music. I’ll begin by reviewing the latest one.

I found them interesting in a way, but there was something that hindered me from fully enjoying them. I might have once put the finger on it, but I don’t remember now why.

However, I just found out that they released an EP back in November 2014. And boy is it a good surprise! Everything is just perfect on it.

For those who do not know Toothgrinder, they’re pretty much a blend of Dillinger Escape Plan, Between The Buried And Me, … Read more

M-Opus is a conceptual band that aims at recreating the aural experience of a certain year in prog. 1975 Triptych is, evidently, a collection of three songs that were made to mimic the sound signature of 1975.

First of all, I have to say that their singer, Jonathan Casey, toured and recorded with the David Cross band (ex-King Crimson) so that’s something to keep in mind!

The sound of the album is pretty … Read more
