Vod as some of you readers may know is a project run by my other Co-Admin of the blog, “Dave Tremblay”. His work spans across many genres from XYAX, Omega Cluster, to a new microtonal Project called “Melopoeia“.

He has released a new album under his project “Vod”:

“ᑑᕐᖓᐃᑦ (Tuurngait, meaning ghost) is an album about winter, the snow, the night, isolation, and the cold. Riffs being built, atmospheres rising and then falling back, polyrhythms and off-time signatures. All played on bass guitar, with drums and vocals. Loads of bass and sub-bass frequencies, and lot of droning and good riffing.”

Vod seems to be where he releases his need as a bassist to come up with really heavy sounding songs and riffs. But his latest album seems to be about atmosphere as much as it is about being heavy. The song structure isn’t stale for the most part and if anything unpredictable at times. Now since some of the songs are 11mins long it can become a little chanty/repetitive for my taste, but it seems that fits along with the atmosphere feel behind the album. The vocals actually remind me of Jens Kidman from Meshuggah on some of their older works. Now as mentioned the songs are long and do require some effort to listen to them but some of the ideas sound awesome, might as well the actual tones he has dialed in sound great.

Unfortunately the final mix for this album was never completed and you can tell mainly with how the cymbals will take over the mix when they are being pounded but the music here is still great. The next album should be great with the direction Dave is taking the Vod project and seeing him mature more in his songwriting.
